What is licorice root extract used for?

In America, we eat licorice-flavored candy at the movies. In Japan, licorice extract is eaten for the liver. Specifically, licorice root extract is used as part of an herbal mixture for hepatitis. While there have been some studies investigating the use of licorice extracts for hepatitis, we don't recommend its use if you have liver disease because of lack of evidence and the potential of toxicity from high doses.
