What you eat travels not through gravity but through a process called peristalsis—a rhythmic contraction of smooth muscle in your gut that moves the lump of food (the bolus) down through the esophagus and into the intestines. (The gut, by the way, is what docs term the totality of tubes from your mouth through your esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, and rectum.)
